Addicted to Chaos: The Journey from Extreme to Serene provides explanations to people, usually high achievers, who reach a point in their lives when the quest for ‘more’ is unfulfilling. In a culture where the “extreme theme” has become the norm, people are increasingly seduced into believing that intensity equals being alive. In the meantime, the mind becomes wired for drama and the soul is starved of meaningful expression. Peace of Mind is a universal pursuit of humans. An underlying anxiety moves from whispers in the back of their minds to confusing thoughts, feelings of despair, panic and disconnection. People that are addicted to chaos almost always have a subconscious conclusion and behaviors that have arisen from unrecognized/unresolved childhood traumas. This maladaptive response can actually surface in the womb! This type of subconscious programming creates problems with the ability to regulate stress properly. Chaos addicts tend to excel in crisis and are rewarded in some way for their ability to thrive when others might fold under the intensity. This serves to validate the maladaptive intensity compulsion. So, even considering turning the volume down becomes an irrational, impossible notion.
Think of chaos and crisis as energy, because that is exactly what it is. This energy has a “charge” to it. It can draw you into it or push you away. The electromagnetic charge of the chaos addict’s “cloud” continues to attract more chaos and repels harmony. Chaos can be healthy and serve as a motivator to change. However, addictive chaos and extreme living can become such a habit that it infects everyone and everything around. People may vicariously revel in a chaos addict’s exploits but attempting to stay involved directly with a chaos addict can become overwhelming and toxic. This is especially true in relationships and tends to run in families as a style of interaction and relating.
Remaining in a state of chaos indefinitely is unnatural. As a chaos addict ages, s/he is left with the dilemma of continuing the addiction ,which increases the risk of exhaustion and death or stopping the addiction. Stopping the addiction can be excruciating as the body attempts to normalize while the mind hungers for the rush. A chaos addict has enormous difficulty in slowing down or relaxing. A chaos addict has a tendency to over-do or under-do nearly everything. Chaos addicts usually have a hidden or overt defiance of authority and strong sense of justice. Why? What better way to create crisis than butting heads with ‘the system’ ? Chaos addicts usually have other co-existing addictions or psychiatric diagnoses. Chaos addicts have extreme difficulty being moderate for any period of time or regulating emotional energy.
Why am I optimally suited to author this book? I know because I have been there, survived, and continue to move forward in remarkable ways that would not have been possible had I not detoxified the chaos addiction from my body, mind, and soul. For nearly twenty years, I have confronted to overcome chaos addiction successfully while learning ways to help others struggling with the same things. I have done thousands of hypnotherapy and coaching sessions with people who exhibit characteristics of chaos addiction , acquiring extensive professional and personal knowledge of addictions , trauma, and psychospiritual issues along the way. I share what I have learned in this book, my upcoming companion workbook and audio series for chaos-free living.
